Ultrasound Technologist

Job Description

1.     Scans patient with skill and knowledge.

  1. Positioning, comfort and safety of patients.

  2. Uses appropriate protocol and guidelines set by AIUM.

  3. Selects proper transducer for exam.

  4. Obtains diagnostic images on patients of all ages for interpretation by Radiologist or Cardiologist and records information for permanent record.

  5. Assists physician as needed during invasive procedures utilizing sterile technique.

  6. Communicates with and observes patient during scan.

  7. Logs appropriate information on printed forms provided for exam and patient information in record books.

  8. Maintains reports in file cabinets.


2.     Meets Quality Control criteria established by reading physician and OVHD on a daily basis.

  1. Documentation of exam on film video, or print.

  2. Selects proper format and gray scale.

  3. Photographs and develops film in accordance with standard.

  4. Complete scan related worksheet and logs required information on daily control sheets.

  5. Reviews exam with reading physician and/or places exam results in designated area.


3.     Patient exam preparation

  1. Demonstrates knowledge of clinical information and practices essential to assuring provision of age-specific and cultural care to infants (31 days to 1 year), pediatric (1 to 12 years), adolescents (13 to 17 years), adults (18 to 70 years), and geriatric patients (71+ years).

  2. Interviews patient to see if the proper prep has been followed.

  3. Explains exam procedure to the patient and tries to put the patient at ease.

  4. Communicates with nursing staff and signs the patient out with chart when transporting patient to the lab.

  5. Regularly practices aseptic technique.

  6. Always washes hands before and after exam.

  7. Always checks patients ID before start of exam.

  8. Demonstrates competence in transporting patients to exam table.


4.     Build and maintain effective working relationships.

  2. Interact with patients, physicians, employees and visitors in a friendly and cordial manner both in person and while on the telephone.

5.     Maintains Ultrasound Equipment

  1. Handles and stores transducers carefully.

  2. Wipes gel off after each patient.

  3. Sterilizes invasive transducers after each use with Cidex for twenty (20) minutes i.e., Post trans-vaginal exams, post trans-esophageal exams, post trans-rectal exams.

  4. Wipes down equipment and cleans filter on a weekly basis.

  5. Reports mechanical or transducer problems to supervisors as soon as possible.

  6. Keeps work area neat and clean.


6.     Responsible for monitoring room supplies

  1. Restocks supplies after use.

  2. Notifies supervisors as soon as possible when special order supplies are low.

  3. Maintains organized supply drawers and cabinets.

  4. Provides technical assistance to co-workers when needed.

  5. Attempts to stay current in field by reading journals and attending seminars.

  6. Maintains CME credit if registered.

  7. May be requested to train less experienced Ultrasound Techs in other modalities or by being available to respond to questions regarding Ultrasound.


7.     Continues education

  1. Provides technical assistance to co-workers when needed.

  2. Attempts to stay current in field by reading journals and attending seminars

  3. Maintains CME credit if registered.

  4. May be responsible for learning other modalities or instructions.


8.     Works appropriately with the scope of his/her license and/or position authority.


9.     Demonstrates initiative and creativity in assigned work, consistently attempting to make things work better.

10.  All other duties as assigned


11.  Provides care in emergency situations and follows appropriate Code Blue notification procedures.  Effectively prioritizes clinical interventions and care.


12.  Performs therapeutic/diagnostic interventions according to organizations policy and procedures including, but not limited to:

         Patient Safety Measures.

         Teaches Ultrasound student in an appropriate manner.

         OB/GYN Ultrasound procedures.

         Abdominal ultrasound procedures.

         Vascular ultrasound procedures.

         Infant head scans.


13.  Competently uses equipment in the delivery of patient care including, but not limited to:

         Obtains necessary training prior to initial equipment use.

         Uses the following equipment in accordance with manufacturer's operating instructions.  Including but not limited to ultrasound machines, processors and laser camera.


4.   Incorporates care into multidisciplinary care and management of the patient/family.  Communicates effectively with the physicians and allied health team, coordinates care with other disciplines involved.

Minimum Education:
Completion of an approved Ultrasound Training Program
At least one (1) year clinical experience/training required
High school graduate or equivalent required
Minimum Experience/Skills:
Two (2) to three (3) years' experience recommended
Able to perform basic mathematical calculations
Current RDMS or eligible for RDMS within 1 year of employment;
RDMS, RDCS, RDVS, NSCPT Certification preferred
Current AHA BLS certification

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
