Job Description

Under the direct supervision of the Dentist assists and supports the doctor in clinical treatment of patients. Provides daily maintenance of instruments, equipment and treatment rooms, and general routine maintenance of housekeeping. Orders and maintains inventory control of supplies.

Records treatment information in the patient's chart. Enters type of treatment planned for next appointment and the amount of chair time, doctor time and assistant time needed. Dismisses patients after treatment.

Under direct supervision with the Doctor present performs:

Apply non-aerosol and non-caustic agents.

Take impressions for diagnostic and opposing models.

Remove post-extraction and periodontal dressings.

Place and remove elastic orthodontic separators.

Assist in the administration of nitrous oxide.

Hold anterior matrices.

Remove sutures, arch wires, ligature ties.

Take intra-oral measurements for orthodontic procedures.

Seat adjusted retainers or headgears.

Check for loose orthodontic bands.

Apply topical fluoride.

Place and remove rubber dams.

Perform mouth-mirror inspection of the oral cavity, including charting of lesions, existing restorations and missing teeth.

Place, wedge, and remove matrices.

Obtain endodontic cultures.

Dry canals with absorbent points.

Test pulp vitality.

Place bases and liners on dentin.

Remove cement excess from supragingival surfaces of teeth.

Size stainless steel crowns, temporary crowns and bands.

Temporary cementation and removal of temporary crowns and orthodontic bands.

Place post-extraction and periodontal dressings.

Placement and ligation of arch wires placement and removal of temporary sedative dressings.

Perform coronal polishing.


Other patient duties:

Seat patients in designated treatment rooms in a timely fashion.

Take, process and mount x-rays.

Pour and trim study models.

Review medical history, progress from the previous visit, if applicable, and the scheduled treatment plan with each patient.

Inform the doctor when the patient is ready.

Assist the doctor by passing instruments, aspirating intra-oral fluids, mixing materials and medicaments.

Record treatment rendered in the patient's chart and charge out all procedures.

Escort patients to the business area for financial follow-up and re-scheduling.

Monitor all incoming and outgoing lab cases.


3. Perform Daily Maintenance:

Turn on al lights, units, nitrous equipment and automatic processors each morning.

Prepare all treatment rooms in advance for each patients.

Decontaminate all treatment rooms and sterilize all instruments after each patient appointment.

Change all chemical solutions, i.e., disinfect soaks and sprays, sterilents, ultrasonic, presoak and x-ray processing.

Maintain cleanliness of treatment rooms, dark room, lab and sterilizing area.

Clean and flush vacuum traps.

Clean and lubricate hand pieces.

Restock all treatment rooms and other clinical support areas.

Clean sharp instruments and handle hazardous chemical in a safe manner.

Decontaminate all treatment rooms and sterilize all instruments after each patient appointment.


Routine Maintenance:

General house cleaning (drawers, cabinets, carpet).

Clean x-ray processing rollers.

Order supplies.

Maintain inventory control of supplies.

Maintain plaster trap and lab counter areas.


Position Qualifications:

Minimum Education:

Registered Dental Assistant training at an accredited school

High school graduate or equivalent required


Minimum Experience/Skills:

One (1) to two (2) years experience or equivalent training

Able to perform basic mathematical calculations

Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred



Current California license/certificate if required


Physical Demands:

Lifts, positions, pushes up to 50 pounds

Considerable sitting, reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching

Manual dexterity and mobility

Ability to move quickly


Vision Requirements:

Ability to adjust vision sufficiently to perform duties


Working Conditions:

Regularly exposed to the risk of contagious and blood borne diseases

Exposure to unpleasant elements (accidents, injuries, illness)

Increased stress due to multiple calls and inquiries

Able to work in spite of frequent interruptions

High exposure to communicable diseases and blood borne pathogens, rare exposure to toxic substances such as

radiation, nuclear isotopes, chemotherapeutic agent

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
